Memorial Day Weekend 2024: Day 2 at Roper Hollow & South Mountain State Park

South Mountain State Park, situated in Burke County, North Carolina, is a nature lover's paradise. Encompassing nearly 87,000 acres, it's the largest state park in North Carolina (excluding national forests). The park boasts elevations reaching up to 3,000 feet, offering scenic vistas and a cool escape from the summer heat. Hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders can explore nearly 50 miles of trails that wind through the park's diverse landscape. One of the park's most popular destinations is High Shoals Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that tumbles over moss-covered rocks.

The park also provides opportunities for water recreation. Visitors can fish for trout in the Jacob Fork River, which flows through the park. Alternatively, head to the Clear Creek Access, which offers access to Clear Creek Lake, a great spot for swimming, boating, and fishing. The park also has a campground with amenities like picnic tables, restrooms, and showers. If you're looking for a day trip or a weekend getaway in North Carolina's foothills, South Mountains State Park is a perfect destination.

Also - Roper Hollow Road, located near Glen Alpine, North Carolina. It's a scenic route that bisects the South Mountain State Park and NC Wildlife Game Lands. It is popular for hiking and enjoying the outdoors.
